As parents, we all want our children to be safe. It can be overwhelming to think about your child getting injured, and it’s easy to tell yourself, “that won’t happen to my child.” But accidents happen, and as parents, it is our job to help prevent them.
That’s why it’s important to be aware of product recalls. The role of the Consumer Product Safety Commission is to ensure that products are safe. You can go to www.cpsc.gov and search for particular products to see if any recall or warning has been issued. Or, go to this page and look for the “Get Involved” box and then click on “sign up for safety news and recalls.” This way, when products are recalled, you’ll know right away!
If a product is recalled, please take the time to read why and even if you haven’t experienced the problem yourself, follow the guidelines for what to do next. In many cases, a repair kit may be available. Other times consumers are encouraged to discontinue the use all together. Either way, I can’t emphasize enough that there is a reason for recalls when they happen and they should be taken seriously.
If you experience an injury from a product, you can also report an unsafe product to the CPSC: http://www.saferproducts.gov/Search/default.aspx.
